Football Manager fan Fitzy decided to take virtual reality into real life when underperforming striker Cristian Lopez couldn’t score a goal to save his life.
The Reddit user, who took over French side RC Lens for the 16/17 season in Ligue 2, described how he wanted to manage a European club in the second tier and liked the look of the club.
Fitzy barely looked at their players before taking over, but their predicted finish was 7th, which prompted his interest.

Unfortunately for the gamer his 29-year-old Spanish forward, Cristian Lopez, was struggling to find the net, so he logged on to Twitter and found the former Real Madrid B and Huddersfield Town player’s account.
“He was playing awfully for me, which to be fair was common for strikers for me back then, it must have been my tactics.” Fitzy told SPORTbible.
“I felt like searching up my players and the club on Twitter to see more about them, and noticed Lopez had open DM’s. I thought it’d be funny to message him about it, but I didn’t think he’d reply.”
The morning after he asked Lopez to start scoring more goals on Football Manager, the striker responded to his request.
“Give extra bonus for goal,” he said. “Or put him on the bench for two games and for sure, he will be angry and score more.”
Fitzy never expected a response from the 29-year-old, but his advice has definitely come in handy in recent months.
“He replied the next morning, I found it funny. Funnily enough I never thought of the goal bonus thing, I’ve used it in all my strikers’ contracts ever since. It was a great tip!

Lopez didn’t manage to find his goalscoring form on Football Manager and, unfortunately for all those that have dedicated themselves to this story, the story was far from a fairy tale.
“I didn’t offer him a new contract (which in turn meant he had no increased goal bonus).” Fitzy said.
“I was lacking in funds to strengthen my team so sent him on loan w/ a fee in January then sold him that summer.”
